My second tarnished oc, Rem. He usually wears the nightmaiden twin crown, but I wanted to draw his face unobstructed. His lore is super meaty and I'm quite happy with it!
Rem is a descendant of the Nox, people of the Eternal Cities. He was raised in Sellia, well versed in Night sorceries and taught melee combat by his 'sisters', Nightmaidens who warden over the town. His days are spent rigorously training his body and mind, honing himself into a warrior capable of subduing the most formidable of foes. Easily identified by both his silvery skin and hair, Rem appears more Silver Tear than anything, yet his golden eyes speak of his heritage, which he is incredibly proud of. And it is perhaps because of his heritage that Rem holds very little love for the Two Fingers and the Golden Order.
Rem had been fortunate enough to meet General Radahn in his youth, and had been privy to the demigod studying gravity sorceries. He grows to admire the flame haired demigod and leaves the Sellian territories for the first time when he offers his services to the General, as both sorcerer and swordsman. He stood among the Red Mane soldiers in battle, dressed in the silks of the Nox, looking elegant as a dancer yet fighting with all the ferocity of a beast. His end is met like many others in the Caelid wilds: witness to the scarlet flower bloom, particles of rot saturating the sky, clogging the beauty of the stars.
He wakes after centuries, called back from a peaceful void to return to the Lands Between. His memories are muddled, mostly lost, but through adventuring he remembers himself, for better or worse. He remembers that wretched flower, and he seeks a power strong enough to oppose it.
Rem is an extremely quiet and emotionally guarded tarnished who borders on selectively mute, speaking little more than he has to. He makes very few connections but is not unwilling to cooperate with his fellows, seeing such actions as a great way to garner much needed knowledge. He gauges everything like a threat but closely safeguards those who win his trust and affection, albeit from the shadows.
Beneath his guarded exterior is a deep longing to return to a home no longer there. Caelid is a fetid wasteland and nightmarish shadow of what it once was, and it is the only time that he openly expresses deep pain upon seeing the remains of a land he once loved so dearly. It hurts more than he can bear to know that Radahn lives as Caelid does--as a shell of his former self. He does not hesitate to participate in the Festival, seeing it as a final act of kindness for his beloved General. It is a hard fought battle, but Rem leaves with Radahn's blades as his trophy, swearing to wield the colossal weapons in battle.
Though Rem was raised in a town of sorcery and has proficiency with night magics, his greatest strength comes from physical prowess. He wields all manner of great swords and colossal blades, overwhelming his foes with sheer strength and relentlessness. He embodies duality, using stealth, life sapping mist and poison to turn the tide of what could have been a heavily skewed battle. He does not see underhanded tactics as something to frown upon. After all, combat (and life) does not play fair. Aside from sorceries, Rem has studied incantations on a surface level, enough to know hos to cast a poisonous mist or mend his injuries.
Rem's loyalty to the red haired demigod is akin to a love that is all consuming. It was a love that felt unrequited, but his unwavering belief and devotion to honing himself into the perfect weapon caught the interest of the towering Radahn. They seemed an unconventional pair, but they both bonded quite easily through combat and a shared love of animals. Leonard, Radahn's steed, received many a rowa berry and nose pats from Rem.
He felt as though he lost Radahn twice over. Once, against the one-armed valkyrie and her scarlet rot, and a second time at his own hand. Though it was a mercy, to grant his beloved demigod a warrior's end, a part of him died again with the General. The loss is an ever present ache that leads to the nihilistic belief that nothing in the Lands is worth salvaging.
The pain of loss and his keen awareness of the loss of many others drives Rem down the path of becoming the Lord of the Frenzied Flame. He does so, not to spare Melina from a fiery end, but to bring an end to it all, to be the Lord of the lost and the broken. To put to rest all that distinguishes and divides, hoping that perhaps the flames will consume him too.

𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝟏 — 𝐁𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐆𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓.
Song: Be My Guest (Azari ft Kaai Yuki & Flower)
Key: Lyrics in pink, romaji in green, descriptions in black
[ Before the music starts, the opening shot is of both wardens looking at the camera. Shiki, a young woman with strawberry-blonde hair and a warm smile on her face, takes a drag from her cigarette and blows the smoke at the camera. The screen darkens as it transitions, the music beginning. ]
You’re without an umbrella, No, no, kasa mo sasezu ni No, no,
[ The screen reveals Mary, a timid prisoner with long white hair and clothing reminiscent of a maid outfit. She's looking offscreen, uncertain about the situation. ]
And your Eyes are closed fusagaru Eyes
[ As Mary’s eyes shut, a pair of red eyes open in the background. ]
If you can’t go home, then you, too, can Be my guest kaerenai nara anata mo Be my guest
[ Shiro, the other warden, reaches out his hand towards Ryuko. ]
My, a well-done, lovely, plastered-on smile? yoku dekita haribote no kirei na egao?
[ The next prisoner, a shorter girl with red hair named Choko, appears just as Mary's image fades from the screen. On the instrumental whistle, her visible eye closes, and the outlined silhouette of a microphone appears behind her for a split second. ]
You can’t get comfortable in front of others, so you, too, can Be my guest hitomae ja kuzusenai anata mo Be my guest
[ Here, Shiki holds out her hand towards her. On the instrumental whistle, the screen goes dark once more. ]
It’s the agreed-upon time, but no one came to meet you? yakusoku no jikan demo mukae ga konai?
[ Here, two prisoners appear on screen at once: Ryuko, a taller woman with short navy hair and a displeased expression; and Kaede, a shorter girl with glasses and black hair tied into twin ponytails, appearing adorable next to her. Ryuko stands on the left side of the screen, while Kaede stands on the right. On the instrumental whistle, their eyes shut. The outlined silhouettes of a man and child appear behind Ryuko, while the mirrored silhouettes of what seems to be Kaede herself with shorter hair appear behind Kaede. ]
You can’t go off the rooftop, so you, too, can Be my guest okujou kara derarenai anata mo Be my guest
[ In the center of the screen, both Shiki and Shiro appear, outstretching their hands towards the two prisoners. On the instrumental whistle, the screen darkens as it transitions to the next scene. ]
Like a black cat, I Step’n step’n step kuroneko no you ni Step'n step'n step
[ Shiro leads his two prisoners, Choko and Kaede, down a path towards the right side of the screen. ]
Haphazardly, I Tap’n tap’n tap teatari shidai ni Tap'n tap'n tap
[ Shiki, meanwhile, leads the other two prisoners, Mary and Ryuko, down a path towards the left side of the screen. ]
I bring you along with a Snap’n snap’n snap anata o tsurete Snap'n snap'n snap
[ The two wardens appear in the center of the screen, with their appointed prisoners on either side of them. On each “snap,” one silhouette of a prisoner appears on each side, meaning that by the end of the line, all ten prisoners are on screen. ]
Dancing with a practiced gait odori nareta ashidori
[ All ten prisoners do a dance on screen on time to the music, while the wardens stand in the background. ]
Despite appearances, our firm is purely pacifistic kou miete heisha wa aku made heiwashugi
[ All of the prisoners have their designs revealed by this point. On the left side of the screen, to the left of Shiro, are the following five prisoners: Mary, Ryuko, Leo, Abigail, and Koji. On the right side of the screen, to the right of Shiki, are the other five: Choko, Kaede, Iori, Kazuhiko, and Mayumi.
During this line, the background changes, becoming what will soon come to be known as the main area of the MILGRAM prison instead of the forest it was before. ]
We’re quite clear in regard to sales quotes and support omitsumori ni sapooto made meikaku ni
[ Signs appear on screen, sort of like crossroads, indicating the three trials and undetermined outcomes. Each sign has the words “guilty” and “innocent” written. ]
But since we’ve just started out, it’s impossible to make allowances tada hajimeta nara tekagen wa muri
[ The prisoners then appear in their straightjackets instead of their normal attire. Their expressions revert to the ones in their official full body artworks. ]
So please, stay up late tonight, Stay up, please douka kon'ya wa osoku made Stay up, please
[ The screen suddenly gains a blue, night-ish filter over it. On the line “Stay up, please”, the screen goes dark in three sections on time with the line. ]
You aren’t friends with them, but you can’t stay away? tomodachi janai keredo hanarerarenai?
[ The background becomes the forest from before. Two prisoners appear on the screen at once: Leo and Iori. Leo seems to always be smiling at the camera, while in contrast to him, Iori seems to feel nervous around the camera and has a timid expression.
On the instrumental whistle, outlines of silhouettes appear behind them as their eyes shut: Leo's silhouettes depict three people, while Iori’s silhouette is that of a cross. ]
You give in so obediently, so you, too, can Be my guest orikou ni akirameru anata mo Be my guest
[ Shiro and Shiki’s hands reach out to the prisoners simultaneously. On the instrumental whistle, the screen changes. ]
There was enough for everyone, but they were one short? minna fun atta noni hitotsu tarinai?
[ Abigail and Kazuhiko are the next prisoners to appear. Abigail is a heavier-set woman with long, green hair; Kazuhiko's blue-almost-black hair falls in a curtain, covering his eyes. His expression is displeased, yet apathetic.
On the instrumental whistle, two new silhouettes appear: behind Abigail, the outlined silhouette of a dog appears; behind Kazuhiko, the outlined silhouette of a young boy appears. ]
You won’t be suspicious of anyone, so you, too, can Be my guest dare hitori utagaenai anata mo Be my guest
[ Shiro and Shiki’s hands reach out towards the prisoners. On the instrumental whistle, the screen transitions once more. ]
On the way home, a detour - the aroma of butter kaerimichi mawarimichi bataa no kaori
[ The final two prisoners, Koji and Mayumi, appear on either side of the screen. On the instrumental whistle, silhouettes appear: behind Koji, the outlined silhouette of a bridge appears; behind Mayumi, the outlined silhouette of a gun appears. ]
And a gentle, laughing voice says, “Someday, you’ll Be my guest” atatakai waraigoe itsuka wa Be my guest
[ Instead of the wardens reaching out their hands, the outline of a pair of white smiles appears in the background. At the very last second, the background changes from the forest to MILGRAM once more before the song ends, the visuals disappearing in a puff of pink cigarette smoke. ]

Elmo Blatch killed Mrs Dufresne and her lover. Are you kidding me? You think Tommy is the sort of guy who's capable of making up this whole person? You think he's willing to go to court to finger a fictional person? You think the warden would kill him to shut him up before looking into the story? This is thinner than the one about Memento where Leonard really killed his own wife and made up Sammy Jenkins based on a momentarily confused memory. Sometimes movies don't have secret twists but they just tell you their real story.

Howling with rage, the muscular brigand charged at him. Though Leonard didn't wear the white vestments of a healer you saw in the city, he still wore the red heart badge that marked him as such. He knew many healers that chose to hide the badge when adventuring. 'Drop the healer, kill the warrior' was the old adage.
It didn't help that basically any halfwit playwright always wrote their healers as tragic and gentle figures surrounded by oh so much suffering. So every halfwit bandit thought a healer would crumple at the first sign of violence. But anyone who is made into a target learns to get tough quick.
Where wizards manipulated the spirits of the elements, healers manipulated the spirit of living beings. We grabbed the soul and tricked it into thinking it was healed. It was easier than wizards thought because the soul remembered its original form. It was a matter of calming it enough to remember it's original form. The hard part was the healing itself. You haven't heard a man scream until you'll helped him regrow all the nerves of a lost eye.
Leonard raised a hand and grabbed the spirit of the brigand. They slowed as they felt the wrongness of someone grabbing his very soul. He did a quick scan of the man's body. There, an old wound on his leg, knotted with scar tissue. It was a poor stitching job, likely done by the man himself. Leonard pushed at it and the man screamed and collapsed as the scar burned in his leg. Leonard took his spear and thrust it into the man's neck before he could recover.
Another bandit saw Leonard and aimed an arrow at him. Smart but distance mattered little to the spirit. This one was young, barely a man, and he was blessed with a youthful body, free of injury. Must be nice, Leonard thought, as his back dully ached.
Leonard focused on the lungs, specifically the diaphragm. Such an important and oft forgotten muscle. Leonard squeezed that part of the spirit and the archer's arrow flew short as the archer struggled to find breath. A bolt of fire struck them in the chest a moment later as Elizabeth swung her staff his way. Meanwhile, Uttara's shield clanged as another bandit got knocked on their back. Her sword quickly found the bandit's unprotected armpit and their heart blood ran into the forest floor.
The three of them started this fight outnumbered but things were leveling out quickly. A axe-wielding bandit leap at Uttara, screaming with a berserker's fury. Berserkers were tough. Like healers, the stereotype rarely matched the reality. Their spirits were forged into steel and they could ignore pain, fear and push their body to the limit.
Her first blow shattered the top half of Uttara's shield. The second one went for Uttara's neck but Leonard pushed at her ulnar nerve, the "funny bone" as his mother called it. Attacking nerves was near impossible to do in a fight. But he made her arm seize for a second which was enough to turn her lethal blow into a glancing one. The axe couldn't cut through Uttara's chain and she drove her blade into the berserkers thigh.
Elizabeth screamed as an arrow broke through her magical barrier and bit into the meat of her right shoulder. As the archer ducked behind a tree, she responded by launching a lightning bolt from the sky, into the tree.
"Sorry Adzo," she said to their absent warden. Adzo like to say she spoke for the trees and if she was here, she would have threatened to break Elizabeth's knees.
While her knees were unshattered, Elizabeth was going to need both her arms to effectively cast spells and she couldn't raise her right arm. Leonard ran over to her and grabbed the arrow with his left hand while putting his right hand firmly on her chest. She grabbed his arm, preparing for the pain.
"Brace!" he yelled. He pulled the arrow out, usually a bad move medically. But he braced her spirit as well as her body and as he pulled out the arrow, the flesh was already knitting itself. The arrow bit in deep but the wound was fresh. Her spirit hasn't had time to acknowledge the change in state yet so healing was quick. Elizabeth muffled her scream but relaxed as soon as the wound sealed.
The archer staggered out from behind the tree, charred and pincushioned with wood fragments. He would be dead soon but a twinge in his back reminded Leonard what happened when you gave mercy to one who would give you none. He reached out and healed all the wounds at once. The pain was crippling and the bandit didn't even see Leonard rush up to drive the spear home.
As he turned back to the battlefield, the back of his head exploded in pain and he collapsed to the ground. Stupid. He was so eager to finish the fight, he didn't notice the other bandit sneak up on him. On pure instinct, he rolled to the right, just as a club slammed down where his skull was a moment before.
"You bastards killed my friends," she growled as she stepped in to swing her club at him again. He didn't have time to get out of the way so he grabbed her ankle where he saw a bit of exposed flesh. Distance mattered less in matters of the spirit but physical contact meant a lot more. In the span of a heartbeat, his mind traveled up her nerves and blocked the signals to her heart.
It was a painless and quick death he called the final mercy. It was something he usually reserved for patients who's illnesses were beyond healing or managing and who asked for an end to their suffering. But sometimes it could be used in battle too.
The bandit collapsed, dead before she hit the ground and Leonard scrambled to his feet. A horn blew and what few bandits remained retreated into the forest. The trio a moment to catch their breath as they watched the retreat.
"I got three," Uttara called out.
"Two and a half," Elizabeth said. They agreed assisted kills count as half for each person.
"Three and half," Leonard called out, unable to keep the weariness from his voice.
"Gods above, healer," Uttara exclaimed. "How do you keep beating us?"
Leonard shrugged, "I heal."
“You’re a healer. Actually, you’re the best healer in the world… so how do you have more kills than everyone else in your party combined?” “Simple. I heal.”

Screenplay: Terry Southern, Joseph McGrath, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Peter Sellers, based on a novel by Southern. Cinematography: Geoffrey Unsworth. Production design: Assheton Gorton. Film editing: Kevin Connor. Music: Ken Thorne.
There are some funny people doing funny things in The Magic Christian: John Cleese as a Sotheby's employee aghast when the billionaire played by Peter Sellers mutilates a painting thought to be a Rembrandt; Spike Milligan as a traffic warden bribed into eating the ticket he's given the billionaire for parking in a loading zone; and Sellers himself trying out an unpredictable variety of accents. There are also some inspired moments: Laurence Harvey playing Hamlet and doing a striptease during the "To be or not to be" soliloquy, and an unbilled Yul Brynner in drag, singing "Mad About the Boy." But this scattershot, anything-for-a-gag movie has too many gags that don't land, including some dodgy gay jokes like a swishy character named Laurence Faggot -- pronounced fa-GOH. It's a sledgehammer satire on the familiar premise that people will do anything for money, and it often lands flat on its own banality.

"Tightening of security at Millhaven prison," Kingston Whig-Standard. October 20, 1971. Page 47. --- Convicts at Millhaven Penitentiary will face a tough task if they ever attempt an escape over the chain link fence which surrounds the new prison. A crew of 50 men from Canadian Forces Base, Petawawa, on Tuesday began installing rolls of heavily barbed wire around the top of the fence. The estimated 4,200 feet of fencing is expected to be in place by Friday. The barbed wire is similar to that used for fortification during the Second World War.

"At Millhaven Penitentiary: Barbed wire used for extra security," Kingston Whig-Standard. October 18, 1971. Page 19. ---- Rolls of heavily barbed wire are being installed around Millhaven Penitentiary to discourage inmates from scaling the 14-foot chain link fences currently surrounding the maximum-security penitentiary.
A crew of 50 men from the second combat group of Canadian Forces Base at Camp Petawawa are to begin installation Tuesday morning, ac cording to a press release from the office of the com-missioner of penitentiaries, Paul Faguy. The estimated 4,200 feet of fencing will be in place by Friday.
The wire, obtained from the Canadian Armed Forces, is concertina wire, similar to that used for fortification during wartime. The wire will be in addition to present security measures, consisting of armed guards on towers and a vehicle patrol outside the institution perimeter.
Wire will be attached to the top of the outermost fence, in addition to being installed in the 15-foot area between the two fences which run parallel around the institution's perimeter.
Prisoners were informed last week of the new security measure through a meeting between about 12 members of the inmate committee and Donald Clark, the institution's warden.
"There was no feedback at all," Mel Willard, assistant Warden, told The Whig-Standard this morning. "I assume they took it in their stride."
Penitentiary reaction was favorable, said Mr. Willard, through the staff hadn't been worried.
The fencing was not requested by the institution, ac-cording to both the release and Mr. Willard. It was agreed upon by advisors to Solicitor General Jean-Pierre Goyer. Similar measures were taken several weeks ago for Archambault Institution, the federal maximum security penitentiary at Ste. Anne-des-Plaines, P.Q. built on the same design as Millhaven. About a month ago several inmates escaped over the Archambault fences.

"Two convicts fail to return from temporary weekend leaves," Kingston Whig-Standard. October 18, 1971. Page 19. --- Two convicts from Kingston prisons, who were in Toronto last weekend on temporary leaves of absence, are report ed missing today by penitentiary officials.
Missing are Eldon Thomas Tutty, 26, who was serving a six-year term at Kingston Penitentiary for robbery with violence and break and enter, and Gordon James Gardner, 59, who was serving a two-year term at Collins Bay Penitentiary farm annex for break, enter and theft.
Tutty eluded his police escort while attempting to res-store relationships with his wife. Gardner failed to return to Collins Bay Penitentiary following a three-day leave of absence.
KP Warden A. J. Jarvis said Tutty, who was on a temporary, one-day leave of absence, eluded his escort at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Toronto and Kingston police were notified immediately.
Tutty was admitted to the institution here in February, 1971, to serve a six year term.
Gardner, who was on a three-day leave of absence, was to have visited St. Leonard's House and Toronto and attempt to seek employment.
He failed to return to the Collins Bay farm annex at 11 p.m. Sunday. Gardner was scheduled to be released June 2, 1972.

Being arrested right after he had taken out the nine men that had kidnapped Congressman Snart hadn’t been surprising. He hadn’t even tried to run when twenty-five Argus agents in full combat gear had stormed the warehouse and pointed twenty-four high-caliber machine guns and an all too familiar speed nutrilzar at him and demanded he get down on the ground with his hands behind his head. He knew Argus would come for him as soon as they pinned down his location, which was one of the reasons why he had made his first priority getting the Congressmen to safety before speeding back to deal with his kidnappers and the inevitable aftermath.
Being fitted with a collar that canceled out his powers and kept isolated in a shoebox-sized Argus holding cell for two straight weeks without any contact with the outside world or other inmates ended up far more torturous than Barry ever expected imprisonment to be. Mostly because no matter how loudly or pathetically he begged the guards and the Warden, no one would tell him if it had all been worth it. It had been over two weeks, seventeen agonizingly long days, and he had no idea if Leonard Snart was alive or dead. It was tearing him apart inside, thinking about spending the rest of his life in this tiny cell, never knowing if he had succeeded or not. If Snart was alive, then nothing else would matter; he’d sit out his sentence, happily even, he just needed to know he had gotten there in time. That he had been fast enough this time.
“-only favor you’re ever going to get from me, Snart. I hope he’s worth it.” Barry barely managed to pick up the sound of Amanda Waller’s voice from down the hall, perking up from his huddled position against the far wall at the name the Warden had just uttered. He waited with baited breath, his eyes squeezed tightly shut to better hear the heavy footsteps and rhythmic tap of a cane against the rough concrete floor that stopped just outside his new home.
The dizzying rush of relief when he opened his eyes and saw Leonard Snart leaning against a snowy white antique cane, dressed in a midnight blue three-piece suit with a shimmering tie that matched his fedora and new cane, made Barry stumble over his own feet as he rushed to get up and stand at attention.
He’s alive. Thank Fuck, He’s alive.
Barry must have stood there staring long enough for the man to find it amusing, the quiet but throaty laugh he let out at the star-struck expression Barry was wearing causing a tingling sensation to travel from Barry’s head all the way down to his toes. Fuck, that was a really nice laugh.
“Lieutenant Bartholomew Allen. An overdue pleasure. I believe I owe you a rather big thank you.”
“No, no!” Barry’s hands spazzed in front of him without his permission, stepping forward then back again as he tried to get his brain to reboot and focus on the fact that Snart was alive, yes, and talking to him this very second. “Please, no thanks needed, Captain. I'm just happy I got there when I did. I thought…”
I thought you were dead, went unsaid between them.
“It's been a long time since anyone's called me Captain,” Snart hummed with a wistful smile, taking a step closer to the bars separating them to lean against the cold iron, giving Barry a chance to study the man’s side profile. He looked worn down, pale, just the smallest hint of bruises still dotting his skin from the attack.
“Yeah, well, it's been a while since anyone called me Bartholomew.” Barry snorted before he could think better of it, biting his bottom lip with a nervous wave of his hand. “Do you, uh, prefer Congressman?”
“Depends. Do you prefer Barry, Lieutenant, or The Flash?”
“Barry. Uh, Barry is fine.”
“Barry it is, but I'm going to have to insist you call me Len if that's the case.”
“You're serious?” Barry asked with a small gasp of disbelief.
“I think you've earned it, saving my life and all.” Snart casually shrugged.
“I wasn't sure if you were going to make it. I'm glad to see I was wrong.” Barry had abandoned all plans when he scouted the warehouse and saw the pool of red surrounding the bound and unconscious man. There had been blood dripping steadily out of his mouth over his busted lip, red and purple bruises covering practically every inch of his face, both eyes puffy from the beating he had received, and a nasty head wound that spanned the majority of the right side of his head just above his ear. His left knee had been broken badly, and there had been multiple knife wounds littering the man’s bare, bloody chest when Barry had found him. It had been like running straight into a nightmare. He had rushed inside, scooped the man up, and rushed him straight to Cait, dropping him onto the waiting operating table before running back to the warehouse to brutally neutralize the nine men that had been holding Snart prisoner.
“I probably wouldn't have if it wasn't for you and your team,” Snart admitted with a heavy sigh, “Doctor Snow was able to patch me up. Ramon even used his secret power to get my sister to me in time so she could give the blood transfusion. I'm told it was all very dramatic.”
“Told?” Barry repeated with a furrowed brow.
“I had some swelling here,” Snart tapped the right side of his head covered by the fedora. “Woke up three nights ago from the medically induced coma. I guess a bat to the head will do that to you.”
“But you're okay, right? She cleared you?”
“I'm technically on bed rest,” Barry opened his mouth to protest Snart being here if he wasn’t cleared, but the man held up a hand to stop him before he could get a word out. “but I couldn't very well let my savior rot in prison any longer than you have to. And I wasn't going to let Ramon be the one to deliver the good news.”
“Good news?”
“You're being released tomorrow morning. All charges dropped.” Len said with a smirk as Barry’s eyes widened in shock at the unexpected news. He thought the favor Waller had been talking about was Len getting to come here and thank him for saving his life, not to tell him he’s being released tomorrow.
“Is there a catch?” It was a stupid question. Of course there was a catch. There was always a catch, especially when it came to the government.
“Not a catch per se, more of a stipulation.” Snart hummed.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning you're on thin ice with Argus, and the only way I got them to agree to release you was by placing you and your team under my protection.” Snart let out that nice throaty laugh again, shaking his head slightly as he continued. “Which is a little ironic if you think about it, considering I'm about to offer you the job of protecting me.”
“What?” Barry replied with a sharp shake of his head, trying to wrap his mind around what was going on right now. This is not at all how he expected this conversation to go.
“I need a new head of security and new bodyguards. Your team is the perfect choice, especially now that the threats against me are escalating.” Snart explained, attentive eyes tracking each and every one of the contradicting emotions passing over Barry’s face.
“The whole team?” Barry tried to keep the hope out of his voice, tried not to visibly long for what used to be, but he’s not internally sure he succeeded.
“Well, Waller wouldn't give up Frost, but I expected that going into the negotiation,” Snart responded with a small apologetic look. “Doctor Snow has already made a name for herself at Mercury Labs and politely refused the offer, but has agreed to be on call if another incident occurs.”
“But the others, they all agreed?”
“They've already been fitted for their new uniforms. Not as flashy as what you wore as a Rogue, I'm sorry to say.”
“Regular suits are fine. I—I don't know what to say.” Barry’s voice was becoming choked up; the mere thought of his team, or most of his team, all back together again, meant everything to him. A simple thank you wasn’t going to cut it, wasn’t going to express the relief Snart had just granted him, lifting that unbearable weight off his chest. The people he trusted most in this world were going to have his back again, were going to be working alongside him day and night, just like it was meant to be.
“Well then, how about you answer a question for me?” Snart suggested.
“Okay, yeah. What do you want to know?”
“Why’d you do it?” Len asked extra softly, head turned full so icy blue eyes could stare right into Barry’s soul. “You knew you'd be thrown in prison. Stripped of your powers. You didn't even put up a fight when they cornered you at the warehouse. You could have run, gone into hiding. We both know you have the training needed to disappear. Why did you throw your life away like that? Why risk everything for me?”
“You're…important. You…metahumans need you, I need you. There’s….a lot of reasons if I'm honest, but I guess the simple answer is because your life means more to me than my own.” Barry swallowed hard after that truth had been released, trying to lighten his confession, he went on. “I mean, I'm sitting across from the future president of the United States, can’t take any chances with your safety.”
“I haven't confirmed or denied those rumors.”
“Well, I hope they are true. I'd vote for you in a heartbeat.” Barry admitted with an easy smile, hoping to convey to Snart how true those words really were.
“I was going to contact you, you know. Before all this.” Snart waved a hand down towards his busted knee, the brace underneath his pant leg more prominent from this angle. “Sara had told me about what had happened in Bosnia. She’s a cherished friend, and she speaks very highly of you. She was very adamant it wasn’t your team’s fault. I’ve been doing some private investigating into the matter these past three months, I was waiting until I had something solid to come to you with. Didn’t want to get your hopes up about getting the team reinstated if it wasn’t a for sure thing.”
“I appreciate you trying, really, we all do.” Barry said quickly, hoping his voice stressed just how much he meant it.
“It doesn’t look good,” Snart said bluntly. Barry sucked in a harsh breath but nodded his head in understand. He knew exactly how it looked. Knew Eiling had done his best to make sure they took the fall for his mistakes.
“I know. I know, but I swear, my team would never—”
“I believe you. That doesn’t mean I can get others to, especially with Eiling out for blood. But,” Snart tapped his cane against the bars as he stood up straight. “I can offer you a new purpose, a new life, and a damn better salary than the military could ever shovel out.”
“And if those rumors about you happen to be true?”
“Then, I’d say your job security is looking rather lengthy, and I just might be able to make damn sure metahumans keep all their right, but I need to be alive to do it, Barry.” Snart was still staring him down, the intense, knowing eyes pinning him in place. “My safety is now in your very capable hands. I look forward to our new future together.”
I look forward to our new future together.
Barry always assumed his future would lie in the military, but being in charge of Leonard Snart’s safety and well-being sounded like a much nobler cause to him the more he thought about it. He would have a direct hand in making sure metahumans were protected for generations to come, and all he had to do was keep one man alive and well.
“When do I start?” Barry asked, matching Snart's pleased grin with one of his own.
“Bright and early. I have a rather busy schedule to keep up with, and a lot of catching up to do. I hope you can keep up.”
“I won’t let you down, Sir,” Barry promised urgently, straightening out his shoulders with a determined nod of his head. He wasn’t going to let anything compromise Snart’s safety, silently promising himself that he would work his ass off everyday to guarantee Snart got to see the inside of the Oval Office and serve a full eight years.
“Len.” Snart–Len corrected. “We agreed, remember?”
“Len. Right. I won’t let you down, Len.”
“I know you won’t, Barry.” Len nodded with a pleased hum. “Now get some rest, we have a busy day ahead of us.”
“Wait,” Barry called out just as Len turned to leave, stopping the man in his tracks.
“Yes?”
“I–my–our powers. Are we allowed to use them?” This wasn’t just about him; his team all had powers they weren’t allowed to use, and he wanted to know if that was still a restriction they would have to deal with.
“Technically only in matters regarding my safety and well-being, but I’ve always loved a good loophole, and I know very well how to use them to my advantage. Don’t worry, I don’t plan on helping repress you or your team in any way. Your powers are yours to use.” Len reassured with a sad, knowing smile.
“Thank you. You–you really don’t know what that means to me.” Barry whispered, coughing to clear his throat of the sudden tightness.
“I might have an idea.” Before Barry could ask what he meant, Len was giving him a small wave and a promise of what was to come. “Until tomorrow, Barry.”
“Bright and early.”
“Bright and early,” Len echoed, tapping his cane against the bars one last time before heading off down the hallway.
“Panic erupted at Central City Hall after unknown gunmen kidnapped Congressman Leonard Snart in broad daylight during his 'Metas are Human' rally. Eyewitnesses to the attack say three of Snart's security guards were killed in their efforts to protect the Congressman and four more were injured. Authorities say they are putting in every effort to recover the Congressman, working around the clock to bring him home safely. If anyone has any information regarding—”
“Hey man, are you watching the news?” Barry didn't bother with a hello when he heard the call connected, his eyes still glued to the footage of the kidnapping replaying on the TV screen. It was the first time since being back in Central that he'd felt the familiar course of adrenaline start to build in his blood. His feet were already vibrating just thinking about running head-first into a new mission. This was a problem he could solve as easily as making a run to the grocery store. He might not be in the military anymore and his whole team may be suspended from using their powers on US soil until the investigation is over, but there wasn't a chance in hell he was going to let that stop him from saving not only his personal hero but the Congressman leading the fight for metahuman rights. If Leonard Snart died, metahumans wouldn’t stand a chance against the discrimination and dehumanization they were up against in Congress.
“Yeah, crazy right? Can't believe they got the drop on Captain Cold.” Cisco replied readily, the echoing broadcast accompanying his voice. “I mean, we've all heard the stories from General Lance.”
Leonard Snart hadn’t always been a Congressman, of course. He was the beloved Mayor of Central City before that, and a decorated police officer briefly after being honorably discharged from the military due to an injury in the field. Leonard Snart was the only human to ever Captain the same covert metahuman team Barry had helped lead for the past five years. The original Rogues were legendary, especially their human leader. He may have only been human, but Snart had a genius-level intellect and was an expert tactician, not to mention an exceptional marksman and a bit of a kleptomaniac at the most convenient of times. Captain Cold was a decorated hero who helped turn the Rouges into the military's best secret weapon. The motivational stories that Sara had told them during training and the old missions she would drill them on had fueled Barry's endless quest to be the best operative he could be. Chasing Captain Cold's legacy like it was critical to his career, right up to the point of obsession. It had helped him rank up quickly, religiously studying Snart's tactical strategies, missions, and reports. Barry learned from his mistakes before he could even make them most of the time thanks to Snart’s detailed mission logs and his additional references to counter scenarios that would have been successful. Barry was the man he is today because of Leonard Snart–his hero, his teacher, and his inspiration. He couldn’t stand back on the sidelines and hope someone else was going to put a plan together and save Snart.
He had to do something.
“Yeah, they would have just shot him in the street if they wanted him dead,” Barry theorized, finally giving in to the restlessness running through his body and taking off into a sprint, barely being able to enjoy the exhilarating feeling of running again before he was across town and right into the middle of Cisco’s underground workshop. “The kidnappers must want something else, but that doesn't mean they won't kill him when they get it.”
“Is this you trying to ask me to look into where they’re keeping him?” Cisco questioned with a surprised eyebrow raised as he took the phone away from his ear and set it down near the gutted metal tube spilling over with wires sitting in front of the scientist, along with an array of tools and loose equipment. If Barry wasn’t mistaken it was one of Hartley’s sonic grenades he was tinkering with. The same sonic grenades the Miltary had confiscated. Barry knew he couldn't have been the only one going stir-crazy since being discharged, but Cisco had been smart enough not to inform the government about his ability to breach, allowing him easy access to anything he wanted, from this world or another. Cisco always had to be doing something with his hands, anything to keep him busy and his ideas flowing. It was a trait Barry had always admired about his best friend, especially right now.
“Maybe? I don't know. I feel like I should do something, he could die,” Barry replied warily, running a hand through his hair as he considered what would happen if he didn't get involved. “The guys who grabbed him have to be professionals, there's no way of knowing what they'll do if SWAT gets involved. I'm thinking if you can pin down his location I can be in and out with Snart before you finish telling me the address.”
“I'll let Frosty and Cait know what's up while I track him down, have them set up the med room for him just in case.” Cisco was already abandoning his workbench and moving towards his computer as he spoke, typing out a message to the girls on his phone while he booted up his PC. “Want me to contact his team and let them in on the plan?”
“After. I don't want to take the chance if this is an inside job. I want Snart safe before we bring outsiders in on this.” Barry responded, knowing in his gut that the only thing they could afford to worry about right now was making sure Snart made it out of this alive.
“Yeah good call, can't have the man spearheading the ‘Metas are Human' movement dying before he can get the bill passed.” Cisco agreed with an approving nod, fingers dancing over the keyboard as he pulled up the satellite footage of the kidnapping.
“Exactly. He's our only chance at keeping our civil rights, Cisco, we gotta save him.” He didn't mention he was their only chance of getting the team back together and their dishonorable discharges dropped. Lance still kept in contact with them all even if it was dangerous for her own career to be mixed up with their disgraced team at such an uneasy time like this. She had risked it though to tell them she had talked to Snart about their situation and he had vowed to do what he could to get them all reinstated and the investigation handled by an unbiased party.
“I know man, I'm tracking them through CCTV cameras right now, shouldn't be much longer. You should suit up.” Cisco suggested, pressing a button on a small remote while nodding towards the now moving back wall where he kept the team’s secret emergency gear stashed. It seemed like Cisco was keeping a lot of secrets from the government down here.
“Red or black?” Barry asked the scientist, trying not to get caught up in the nostalgia of seeing his team's suits lined up and on display again. It had only been three months since the team was disbanded but it felt like years to him. This felt like coming home, much more than arriving at Central City airport after 12 years away had.
“Black. Should probably keep this one stealthy.” Cisco replied, turning his head to the side to meet Barry's eye. “Are we playing this like Karmana or Kota Baharu?”
“Moscow,” Barry said with a soft hum, trembling fingers reaching for the reinforced tripolymer fabric waiting for him. It really had been too long, the anticipation was almost too much for him to handle. He's missed the comfort of his super suit. Of his team. His life. God, everything had gone to such shit so quickly that he never even got to prepare himself for never suiting up and leading a mission again. It had been stripped from him just like his team, his rank, and his reputation had.
“Oh really?” Cisco curved his surprise quickly, his worry pushing forward instead. “You think he'll remember the call sign?”
“He'll remember,” Barry replied confidently, not wasting another second and flashing into his suit. It was even better than he remembered, like a missing limb growing back, or maybe he had missed his old life more than he cared to admit. Now, he felt safe and powerful and needed. Three things that had been severely lacking in his life since being discharged.
“Let's hope you're right,” Cisco muttered before glancing down at his phone and smirking in triumph. “I've got the location and Cait is almost ready. It's showtime, Lieutenant Flash.”
“Don't call me that man. I'm not your lieutenant anymore.” Barry said with a shake of his head, brushing off Cisco's quick reply.
“The government may have royally fucked us all over and disbanded the team, but that doesn't mean I lost respect for the rank you earned dude.”
“Whatever, can you just give me the address please? We have a Congressman to save.” Barry pulled his cowl up, letting it settle into place and feeling his shoulders drop down, all the tension he was carrying leaving him at once. There was no better feeling than using his powers to save someone, and now after months of moping around his shoebox apartment and his mind-numbing third-shift security gig, having to refrain from using his speed, he was going to get to use it to save Leonard Snart. He knew the ‘Oh shit, I’m going to meet Leonard Snart!’ freak out he would no doubt have later would be embarrassing and long, but it would mean Snart would be alive and that was more than enough for Barry to look forward to making a fool of himself in the future.
“Uh, yeah, about that,” Cisco winced at the latest text that popped up, shooting Barry a constipated smile. “Hopefully he's like really grateful you’re risking it all right now to save his ass and can keep you from getting arrested for doing it. Frost says they know you're active. APB is about to go out. Waller is pissed.”
“Better make this good then, I'm too pretty for prison.” Barry couldn't help the grin that stretched across his face as Cisco finally rattled off the address to him, offering him a lazy salute that a year ago would have gotten him kitchen duty for two weeks. Now it just earned him a good-natured laugh.
“Good luck, Lieutenant,” Cisco said with an encouraging pat on the back, letting out a small laugh to himself when Barry took off just as quickly as he had appeared. “Something tells me you're going to need it.”
